Paid Search

Paid search or search engine marketing (SEM) is the process of gaining website traffic or phone calls by purchasing ads on search engines.

PPC is normally taken to stand for pay-per-click. Advertisers pay each time a user clicks on their advertisement. However, PPC may also stand for pay-per-call. Because some ads, particularly those served to mobile search users, may be charged by the number of clicks that resulted in a direct call from a smartphone.

Most search ads are sold on a cost-per click (CPC) and PPC basis. However, some advertising platforms do offer the option of paying by number of ad impressions or views. These sort of ads are on a cost-per-mille (CPM) basis, i.e. the cost for one thousand impressions.
